Now's the perfect time to skateboard a local outdoor rink

The holidays might be over, but there's still lots of winter ahead, and you don't need to spend it all inside. Bundle up and take advantage of something you can only do when the weather's frosty: ice skating outdoors. While Chicago's significant Daley Bicentennial Plaza and Wrigley Field ice rinks are usually closed, there are still plenty of nearby places to show off your goes, get some exercise and make the best of the season.

Many suburbs provide an assortment of rinks, so check with regional park districts for a whole listing. Here is just a testing of rinks in the area:

The rink during Civic Center Plaza has a chilled skating system, which keeps the idea open later in the year or so than a naturally frozen rink. This year the synthetic ice rink moved from Town Center Plaza to near the snowmobile hill behind Clauss Recreation Center, 430 Mensching Road. Skate rental just isn't available, and the plastic rink is most effective with freshly sharpened cutting blades, so make sure to check your own property.
