IWC whaling proposal 'offensive'
Foreign Affairs Minister Longchamp Le Pliage Tote Uk Murray McCully says an International Whaling Commission (IWC) proposal, which would allow hunting to continue in the Southern Ocean Whale Retreat, falls seriously short of giving a strong basis for a diplomatic answer.
"I personally think it's bothersome," Mr McCully said.
"The hook limits proposed in the Southerly Ocean are unrealistic. The proposal to include fin whales in the Southern Ocean is inflammatory. New Zealanders will not take this."
He said New Zealand's ultimate goal was to view an end to all whaling in the Southern region Pacific.
Mr McCully will continue to work on a diplomatic solution and see if negotiations can be brought back on track.
Even so, he said the diplomatic process can be abandoned if it stopped becoming productive.

At a protest around Wellington today, Greenpeace New Zealand executive overseer Bunny McDiarmid said the estimate was unacceptable.

"We need to see an end to whaling inside Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, it's actually not good enough to just reduce (them).
